Chiaroscuro
Chiaroscuro is the use of strong light against deep shadow to model figures. Caravaggio pushed it to the extreme now called tenebrism, with a single light source and a black ground.
Example
In a Caravaggio room the technique decides where to stand: the light in the painting is meant to fall from one side, and the gallery lighting often fights it.
