What it is

Italy's Ministry of Culture opens state museums and archaeological sites free of charge on the first Sunday of each month. In Rome that includes the Colosseum, the Borghese Gallery and Castel Sant'Angelo.

What to expect

Free entry removes the ticket, not the queue. Some venues still require a reservation or hand out numbered slots at the door, and the Vatican Museums are not part of the scheme.

Getting there

Check the venue's own page the week before, because reservation rules for the free Sunday differ by museum. Arrive before opening at the Colosseum and the Borghese.
