Baroque

The Baroque is the art of seventeenth-century Rome: theatrical, emotional and built for the Counter-Reformation papacy. Bernini, Borromini and Caravaggio are its Roman names.

Example

Palazzo Barberini, begun after Urban VIII's election in 1623, is called the prototype of the Baroque palace because all three of its architects were the century's leading names.
