Free first Sunday
Domenica al museo is the Ministry of Culture scheme that opens Italian state museums and sites free of charge on the first Sunday of every month. In Rome it covers the Colosseum, the Borghese and Castel Sant'Angelo, but not the civic or Vatican museums.
Example
On a free Sunday the Borghese still requires a reservation and the Colosseum still issues timed slots, so the day is free but not spontaneous.
